I don't think an artist needs to write their songs if they're not good songwriters. Whitney Houston didn't write a word of her first 3.5 albums (her peak, most would say) and those are still incredible songs and she's still one of the greatest artists of all time. If you're not a writer but are a gifted performer/singer, you shouldn't be barred from the music industry cause you weren't born with a specific songwriting talent. Not everyone can do it all like Mariah!
