if you're black or just followed urban a lot then you would obviously be more aware of Mariah
but if you didn't then...then you'd probably be more "hip" to Madonna songs

Because the album was released a YEAR later since you wanna act like you don't realize.
If Gaga released ARTPOP a year after Applause her album would've did like 95K first week. This applies to any act who pushes their album back a YEAR after their hit.
If she released it when it was hot she could've easily did double that with promo thrown in (MIAM received no promotion at all during the album's release but a 15 minute CBS special, and a World Music Awards performance which didn't air when the award show got cancelled).
#7 and #41 year end is not a 'big hit'
