In my view, Capitol is simply practicing ... capitalism. The label is aware that Perry could surpass Jackson's haul and make history and, of course, it hopes that she does. Ultimately, it's operating within chart rules to help "One" achieve maximum popularity.

Rihanna's S&M song was already a bonafide hit before Britney hopped on the remix. Granted that the record label wanted it to be her 10th number 1 by having a remix to it only added to the "popularity" of the song. What Katy is doing is desperate.

They're technically right but I got a feeling that TOTGA reaching number 1 and breaking MJ's record might affect Katy's career once a break-out of cheating claims becomes widespread outside the internet.

And TOTGA and LFN were already hits when theyre remixes came out, to add popularity to the song.
Theyre basically in the same position, so deal.

I don't mind if it's an occasional thing- but she's making it a habit. At this rate she'll do all of the remaining songs on the CD the same way. MJ did it solo.

But... they're not tacky. From a business perspective... it's smart. Michael had no remixes because nobody was checking for remixes back in the 80's and th industry wasn't as big then as now.

But MJ had an easier time doing it than Katy. Back then they only measured sales, not sales + airplay. If that were the rules today, then Last Friday Night wouldn't have needed a remix. Hell, The One That Got Away might even do it.

And TOTGA and LFN weren't hits before remixes ? LFN was #2 before remix . And it's a COMPLETELY different situation to make a remix of a commercial song which is 4th single then a depressive , sad song which is 6th single
