They just want more money. Designing your own jack means they can sell more of their own headphones, or other brands will have to pay Apple to use their jack.
If they wanted to do what they claim they want to do (better control, noise cancellation, etc), they could have used the standardized mini or micro USB jack. That works perfectly fine.

I cant at some of you acting like a new standard means better. take cd to mp3. The quality deteriorated. When we shifted from vinyl? Um even to this no one in their right mind (especially audiophiles) will say that vinyl is inferior to cd/mp3 quality.

LOL! There is no way Apple will be able to release a lightening headphone without some sore of connector cable for legacy headphones but lets be honest the headphone jack has been around forever and has never been updated. It's about time to push the headphone tech forward.

That is the Apple you are seeing here. Cool and innovative means improving all of the hardware and leaving no stone unturned to make their devices better. Everyone gripped about the mouse, getting rid of CDs, no USB in iPads/iPhones etc...

They have to move the platform forward. If the headphones being lightening will allow for better quality sound then I'm all for it.

What are you talking about? Lightning allows BETTER sound quality... moving from analog (3.5mm) to digital audio. It's also rumored that iTunes will begin selling music in 24-bit quality (over the current 16-bit) offering much more clarity and detail (full info here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1724588). The technology itself will benefit the user, especially audiophiles. We just need companies to make headphones that are offered with a Lightning plug also.

This is a completely stupid move that will alienate customers but lets not pretend that in five years everything from computers to MP3 players won't be implementing a way to use these new headphones. Unfortunately Apple is at the head of the pack so what they do will influence other companies to follow suit. If they're getting rid of the standard jack then electronic devices will surely change to accommodate whatever new way they implement.
