Michael's career lasted 45 years and he was about to stage the biggest comeback the world has ever seen. There was INTENSE, fever-pitch demand for him. Unfortunately, he died before it could happen. Whitney also scored a #1 album in 2009 and was preparing to record more music. The only one Madonna "outlasted" and that's because Whitney died, not because she faded into obscurity. However, she's still selling records in her death.

I mean I agree. There are tons of pre-Billboard artists who don't really get fair recognition and while Madonna was a pioneer of many things there are artists she owes a debt to as well. But to call her anything less than a legend and one of the most important musicians in history is ridiculous. And you said it yourself, ATRL stans sales so it is just the easiest thing to use as an arguing point.

What leverage does sales have in a discussion about the length of one's career? None. The only thing that matters here are YEARS. And going by YEARS, Madonna has only outlasted Whitney and Mariah, and only because they debuted after her.

Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Prince, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and Madonna are ALL legends and ALL of them have made a significant amount of impact in the music industry.

They are all talented in their own way and will always be remembered for paving the way for the current stars of today.
