idk what you are talking about, because Germany has been the second biggest immigration destination in the world for a decade now.. (2nd to the US).
Germany is even sending the Navy to the Mediterranean to stop making the seas one of europe's biggest cemeteries. But even that is problematic.. German Navy is by law not even allowed to do sth like that, by law any germany military branch only exists for self-defense. Going to Afghanistan was sth which needed a change in the german constitution.
secondly Germany has no international sea border in the Mediterranean... and we all know how happy France and Italy are to see German navy ships so close to their shores.
thirdly Germany cannot do everything on their own. Even this refugee crisis needs all european countries in the same boat (literally).
Remember that Germany has VERY little experience as a sovereign state (25 years). It is still resented.. it is only now that it is slowly waking up. Anything it does seems to be offensive to somebody else and everytime again sb brings up the Nazi word.
Greece media even printed a caricature of Germany sending Greece to Auschwitz. That not only hurts German people who resent everything which happened back then, it also ridicules the real victims of the Nazi regime and those who were industrially murdered by gas in that concentration camp.
Germany is not the evil of europe, it is the european system which hangs in a limbus which is causing Germany to act in one way or another.
As I said.. The refugees are coming no matter what. You can closer all borders and they would still come, they are already here, they are already in Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey etc. You cannot do nothing. But that is what Europe is going for, or at least a par of it.
What does it say about a continent and its values when you don't value life in general? Europe is in the unique position to do sth good for the world. The most dominant global power of the past 500 years has not done right by its title in the past. But today there is a chance to change that.
Germany needs to act bc nobody else would. Take the Euro.. a currency which was forced upon Germany as a condition to be allowed to re-unify with the GDR. It was PROMISED that with the currency all other monetary and fiscal reforms would follow suit in order to make the new currency work. NOTHING happened ever since.. The currency under the current laws cannot work. IT CANNOT WORK. There is a HUGE debate here in Germany what has to happen in order to fix that. But then...France would be against, Holland would be against it.. XY would be against it because we have reached a time of when European integration is not seen as important anymore. Countries are voting nationalistic parties in order to try to re-establish things as they were in idk when..1914? There is a reason why this never worked in the past.. there is a reason why European integration is the only way for Europe into the future.
Europe has so many problems right now.. and it is Germany (maybe 1 or 2 more) that have detected the problems and which are somehow forced to act.
I mean we could all go back to a reclusive Europe, egotistical, antagonized on the inside, but Germany will never go back to its past.
