It's funny how you're talking like that's what happened .

They gave her a development deal for a year ( while she was signed to another record company as a Songwriter only , she wrote music to recording artists ) , and when she came back , they told her that they wanted her to grow more as an artist and that they want to extend the deal to another year .
She was fourteen and she had the guts to walk away from the biggest label in Nashville because she didn't want to wait more .
Then at a Songwriters show case at the Blue Bird Cafe , she performed a couple of her songs and impressed Scott Borchetta , he worked at Universal records but wanted to start his own label , he told her that he can't tell her when it's gonna happen and how long it would take , but he knew that he wanted her as his first artist , and Taylor trusted him and waited .
THAT is how she got signed .
Note that some songs from her debut album were written when she was Thirteen years old .
