One day I'll strip to Candy Shop and I'l enjoy it 1000000x times than this disastrous rate.

75. Candy Perfume Girl

Average - 6.921
Album: Ray of Light
Rank within album: 8th of 14
Hearts (11): HausOfCarlos (10): conatus, THEBEASTWITHIN, eli's_rhythm, Pandora, Brunette Ambition, C/H/A/N/E/L
Rebels (1): HonourableVomit
Host commentary - A far cry from my favorite ROL tracks, but I do think it has an interesting narrative that works for it. Ray of Light is an album that relies heavily on repetition, but usually the song is strong enough that I don’t notice. But I do notice here typically. It has been the song to grow on me the most from first listen.
Guest commentary
Pandora - Definitely one of her best of all time. Alluring, dark, mysterious + cutting edge. I love this song specifically for the amazing ‘vague’/metaphorical lyrics and addictive production/arrangement.
Subomie - A bit clunky and a massive comedown from Ray of Light. Don't hate it though.
Alongoria13 - Too similar to Swim which is not a bad thing.

Mess, no. It's definitely not the worst one though, I just thought it would be overrated so
Poor Candy Perfume Girl.

To understand Candy Shop, we would have to go back to 2006. Back then, Madonna made her first mistake - she became interested in working with Justin Timberlake who, let's be honest, wasn't particularly creative during his FutureSex/LoveSounds era. Then we have mistake #2 - for further work she used Pharrell's demos. To add salt to the wound, she hired Timbaland who just started his decline. All of these combined made Hard Candy sound just incredibly weak and generic, with Candy Shop being just another evidence. The song-writing of it is just as unimaginative as it could get (candies being sex metaphors are not anything new or interesting), the melody sounds like another generic Pharrell track and let me not even start at this abhorrent chorus. That said, Candy Shop is simply painful to listen to, and the fact that she's been performing it for nearly 10 years over her actual masterpieces is sad.

Agree so much with this. So much of Hard Candy gets me excited for a potentially great song but ends up being subpar. I'll always be sad about She's Not Me

I distinctly remember both Candy Perfume Girl and Shanti being 2/3 of my trinity when I first discovered the album.
my only question now is why

Host commentary - Like I’ve said, I’m not a big fan of her sanskrit songs tbh. This one definitely works better than Cyberraga and I think it flows into Frozen really well so I think it is a necessary piece of the album. But I would never listen to it individually.
Guest commentary
eli’s_rhythm- a childhood favorite
Subomie - The production and chanting in the background is interesting but Madonna herself flops here, just sounding laboured.
mrmikefern - Yes, I have twerked this song.
Alongoria13 - I mean if I knew what the **** she says I'd probably enjoy it more.

Y'all a mess. A hot bop. Keeping **** like White Feet in and not this. Shameful.

Rebels (1): enxe, Brunette Ambition, Vilppu
Host commentary - The opening verses are almost cringeworthy and the chorus isn’t great, but then that bridge comes in and turns everything around (kinda). That bridge is flawless and Nicki’s verse pretty much upstages Madonna completely while still paying a nice amount of homage to her to make up for that. And by the time that amazing outro hits, you’re convinced you listened to an amazing song. You didn’t, but it does have more good moments than bad. Like a lot of MDNA, if some of the pieces were refined a bit more I think it would be a true gem.
Guest commentary
Vilppu - The outro of I Don't Give A is honestly one of the most interesting and surprising moments on MDNA. Too bad the rest - the terrible verses, the annoying chorus, the completely unnecessary Nicki's rap - is basically unlistenable.
Pandora - I feel like this song is a definitive highlight from her 10s discography. Fun beat, good vibes + amusing lyrics make I Don’t Give A the perfectly flawless, fiery, gay anthem it is. Pity we never got a video for it, cos that’d surely be FIRE.
eli’s_rhythm - lol the most underrated song on the album besides GMAYL
Subomie - Nicki's verse is fire, the ending chanting and the bridge are all great. The rest kind of limps along, but points for baby Jesus on the stairs.

Overlong af (that 58-minute outro ) and overproduced af. Could've been great. Nicki's verse is one of her best tho >>>>>

Rebels (0): Vilppu (1): XStaticProcess
Reinvention commentary - What is there to say? This song is perfect in so many ways, and blatantly one of Madonna’s own favourites. First of all, the song alone is great. The lyrics are blatant at parts, subtle at others. The beat thumps, and it challenges ideas about women’s sexuality and of course breaks down the expectations placed upon woman of a certain age and their sexuality. Madonna is asserting herself, refusing to conform, as she’s always done, and demanding us to worship her as the sex ICON that she is, and refuses to be seen as anything else no matter what age.
Vilppu commentary -To understand Candy Shop, we would have to go back to 2006. Back then, Madonna made her first mistake - she became interested in working with Justin Timberlake who, let's be honest, wasn't particularly creative during his FutureSex/LoveSounds era. tylerlscwv - Preach Vilppu, preach! Take to church with your drag! Not even joking when I say Vilppu's commentary here might be my favorite part of the rate. The best part of this song’s placement is I didn't even have to drag it with my scores (I gave it a 4, which is higher than Reinvention's average score for everything pre-Music, so I think I was more than fair). It got justice by the grace of the general stan base. We have found victory today my friends as Flaccid Werther's putrid mission statement has finally been slain. It will live on taking up the spot of better songs on M's tours, but we will always know in our heart of hearts that it is trash.
Lifeline - Our Quen Alongoria made me use it. I'll admit that here to the general public.
But M choosing this as an uninspired tour filler ever since S&S made me sick of it again.
Eevelution - Candy BOP, amirite? Come on y'all lighten up and let this have top 30.
Subomie - Funky and cool, I like that Madonna knows her fans don't like it but brings it out on all the tours since its release. I love her.

Right place for it. But Heartbeat and Dance 2Night should be above it.

The second-worst on ROL. I can never get through this song. I doubt I've listened to it in full more than once. The production is nice, but I always skip to better songs.
