Or perhaps be even more honest and say "the general public doesn't want to see me wearing lobsters anymore." That's the honest truth. If Gaga's costumes were still accompanied by great commercial success, I think she would still be wearing them.
Björk is widely respected, works with many fantastic musicians, and just spent her entire last era dressed like this:
If the music is on point, no one will be distracted by a lobster. Obviously Gaga and Björk are very, very different artists, but it's still a decent comparison. Björk's eccentricity turns casual fans off, but it certainly doesn't distract from her music.
