I think the problem was more of Unconditionally just isn't strong enough to follow Roar. Teenage Dream was strong enough to get people to move on from California Gurls.

My personal single choices will be "Legendary Lovers", "Dark Horse", "Choose Your Battles", "Double Rainbow" and "Walking On Air".

This. Unconditionally feels like it's strictly ballad where as Teenage Dream had some pop and ballad in it.

But it was a promo single, it was meant to perform like that. E.T. Barely made it into the Top 10 when released as a promo single, but that wasn't a bad choice, was it?
Dark Horse is not what's stopping Unconditionally from smashing. If any of the up-tempo songs on Prism had been Single 2 or was made Single 3 everyone would forget about Dark Horse and move on.

Having some manners and waiting on Katy giving it permission to slay, unlike the messy Dark Horse which is just going around doing whatever it wants and ruining everything.
