No she redefined it. The Superbowl, the Inauguration, the pepsi deal, the tour has all kept her extremely visible this year with all this anticipation of when in the hell is she finna drop new music? Then dropping it out of nowhere... genius. Nothing is more powerful than word of mouth and the online platform, the move itself made the people talk. More people know about BEYONCE than they do artpop tbh

The hell was she promoting then? Herself? Lol #byebitch I remember back in June you guys were all saying the Superbowl promo wore off and she'd flop. Just admit it, she's a success and has done no promo.

This. She had so much exposure in the first half of 2013 that the novelty will help her release be huge. Just like how Miley's WB was doing well on Itunes before it blew up. "It girls" can do anything during this novelty and it will somehow become huge. If Bey did promote herself in the first half of 2013 and released this record, she wouldn't be smashing.

Accidentally voted no.
Honestly, taking this at face value, she really did. She did no promo and is selling off name/hype alone. But, when people say no promo, it usually talks about non-surprising releases, which are kind of boring and uneventful.
Bey's rush release is promo in itself, but that's not to say she wouldn't have sold just as much, if not more, if it weren't for this tactic.

So the other pop girls Tour's and performances right now counts as promo for their next albums too? Okay deeeen. What the **** are yall talking about. This album had no promo at all. Yes, the surprise release spread like wildfire but she did nothing to promote the music on this album. And i dont buy a new album because i saw a performance of someone at the super bowl performing old songs etc. She KILLED the 'no promo' excuse.

No. Because while this is a HUGE and AMAZING feat, the buzz and everybody talking is promo in it of itself. Ya dig?

The only promo was iTunes banners, plus she posted about it on Instagram. That's it. What other artist would dare to do that?
And a surprise release is NOT promo. I didn't know simply releasing an album was a promotion tactic. How does that make sense?

She can't help that people are excited for the album and buying it left and right. She's sitting back doing nothing while all this is happening
So the answer is yes.

Staffers at the highest levels of Columbia Records were kept in the dark about Beyoncé’s new album until Thursday night, when they found out along with the rest of the world their top client had secretly been recording music and making unbelievable videos in anticipation of the stealthy release Thursday.
“Honestly, most of us found out when everyone else did,” one Columbia insider tells Confidenti@l. “That’s just how secret it all was, and what it takes to keep it as such.”
We’re told Queen Bey had called for operation “TNO” — “Tell No One” — which was strictly followed by the crews, directors, makeup and wardrobe people whom the singer worked with for the past year and a half on the project.
“There were a few people that were absolutely necessary and essential to set it all up, and they held their cards tight,” our source says. “They trusted her vision.”

Exactly. People need to realized the difference between hearing news about Beyonce throughout the year (she is a celebrity after all) and hearing news of the album.
NO news of the album was out until the album was out. Therefore no album promo.

Everyone was like " She did superbowl and the pepsi deal and she didn't release a new album, Such a wasted PROMO" and then "Beyonce will flop, she should've released after Superbowl"
And now suddenly the superbowl and PEPSI are promo for the album

If it was November around BF and we'd be talking about Rih I would agree. But by yesterday 99% of hive was prepared for 2014 just wondering when 1st single will drop. Nobody was stalking iTunes page.

TBH, I think these other fanbases, especially a certain 2, are just jealous because they've been running around screaming "no promo" to make up for the lack of album sales and floppy singles and now they can't really do it anymore.
Talking about an album, performing, releasing videos, word of mouth, touring, hype, etc. are now all considered promo.

No. The surprise release and iTunes home page are promo. She's made headlines everywhere. This is probably better promo than doing performances and TV appearances.
If/when more artists do this in the future, they probably won't see success as great as this. It's smashing because it's never been done before (and it's Beyoncé).

It's just reaction.

What's so hard for people to grasp? It's one thing to note that our faves can't pull off something like that but it's another to be delusional.
