Rihanna was the highlight last time she performed at the AMAs. She brought the house down.
And death at people forgetting how hyped up the Britney tribute was. The rumors surrounding the tribute skewed the numbers. If it was known that it was going to be a handful of teenage girls gyrating around to Britney's songs, the viewers would not have been that high last year.
Well... That tribute was a huge pile of ****ery... I will say that much.
You need an "it" celeb at an award show to bring in good ratings... the closest thing they had there last night was 1D, I can only imagine if they didn't come
I'd say Adele and Beyonce brought in more viewers than Gaga and Brit last year, tbh. Bey's pregnancy broke Twitter records, right? All of the tweets obviously must have caused many people to tune in for the last half of the show.
This is quite embarrassing for MTV seeing that they got beaten by BET. The opening performance needs to be on point to keep viewers... So we have no choice but to blame Rihanna.
I guess we'll just have to see her star power seems kind of fading though seeing as how her last single, a super commercial uptempo dance song couldn't even crack top 20
Not to mention Britney's last single flopped beyond compresion.
And don't even get me started on Beyonce
So much apparent star power, yet all their latest efforts flopped
Not everybody's career or relevance is based on how successful their latest single was. Must be a tough life for those that doesn't apply to

Child, Beyonce rubbing the tummy was a surprise. No one knew about it. That didn't bring in numbers. It brought silly gifs, fake pregnancy rumors and gossip of how gimmicky her stunt was to sell her records.

Let's not blame OneDirection.
They brought in as many viewers as they could. Probably the reason that it wasn't 5 million viewers.
The problem with this year is that they barely promoted anyone. All I saw was 1D whenever there was advertisements. No mentions of Rihanna or Katy. MTV need to sort their act together and promote for next year.
But reasons aside, this is really bad for MTV. Ratings for film, TV & music award shows have all been up for the past couple years. A 50+% drop is disastrous.
