It's because of the EPIC FAIL marketing and the genericness of the movie's look. Like what was said, action movies tend to rely more on its looks, the epic action moments and.....well, it's hard to explain. I know you get it anyway. Just common sense.

Why would a movie with loads of action, robots trying to destroy the world flop? I mean it's the perfect movie, it has all the things it needs to smash. This is not a shock.
