"A new movie with Brad Pitt? Cool! I'm gonna watch this." (even if the movie is a total crap and the only promotion is the trailer played in the cinemas) - This is a simple example of how a sole name can bring in more people.

Yes, exactly, Avatar had a lot of other things going for it - the stars were the least of what drew people in. And no, none of those names you listed are bankable stars that get people to go see movies en masse.
And I never said that star power as a draw was non-existent for every type of movie. Brad Pitt is one of the biggest names in Hollywood over the past 20 years, Rihanna is in no way comparable.
