I believe YG intentionally made the members of BB (and later 2NE1 at their debut) appear less than stellar to prove their capabilities first, then improve the appearance department later on.
Dara isn't that great of a singer, dancer, etc. but when you compare her to some of the "talentless" idols in the business then you realize that she's more talented than people give her credit for being.
