Well it wouldn't make sense I think because he said he came from a family of non-benders. If Zuko is his father, and assuming Mai was his mother, he would have benders in his family.

I believe that Amon is Aang's non-bender son, and that his backstory was fake. Tenzin briefly talked about him......and it would make sense why he wants to get rid of all the benders because he was jealous that he was always the odd-man out within his family.

That's not a bad theory. And that would explain why he's able to take away bending since Aang was able to as well (though I'm not sure if that was only an Avatar thing...but since Ty Lee was able to do it temporarily, idk).

Ty Lee could only temporarily take away someone's bending by blocking their Chi. Aang and Amon can (seemingly) take your bending away forever.
