Well, it just got to where there were so many stars produced by these shows, that were all shoved down our throats year after year... Not all of them could be successful and have longevity...
And those that did have the star power were eliminated early on (like Jennifer Hudson) or ended up being the runner-up, left with not as much promotion or anything.
Look at Clay Aiken losing to Ruben Studdard. Clay, the runner-up got a number one and blocked the winner from scoring it. And also, David Archuleta, who would have had a number one in 2008 if not for Rihanna's "Disturbia"... He was the runner-up to David Cook, who hasn't shown all that much commercial value as of late...
So faith in these shows is kinda running thin. It's more of an entertainment thing now, rather than a career-builder.
