Do you know how much have TD's singles sold in the US and WW? Approximately...
Maybe something like this. Very rough estimate here.
7.5 million - Firework
7 million - California Gurls
6 million - E.T.
The rest I'm not really sure about. I'll look and post later.
I can't at people still thinking single sales are worthless. You do know that's what artist thrive off of to meet ends worth now right? Albums just don't sale anymore. People like one song from an artist, and they'll only buy THAT song. Back then if you wanted just 1 song, you had to buy an entire album.
So 21 didn't sell 20M?
The Fame didn't sell 15M?
Loud didn't sell 8-9M?

So I guess something around 30-32M (excluding POM).
Btw sort of didn't live up to its expectations and it was over hyped. Td singles make up for the album sales and the label smart tactics for Katy to have 5 #1 singles work.
Looking purely at WW numbers, it's probably Born This Way, but in terms of their careers, TD by FAR.
TD basically saved Katy's ass, and made people stop calling her a one hit wonder and actually pay attention to her. It catapulted her success. BTW on the other hand was far less successful than Gaga's previous eras, so based on that it's not a particularly successful era for her standards - but that doesn't stop it being an era plenty of people would kill for.
I think Teenage Dream winning this poll is a good example of how most of ATRL only cares about the success of singles over album sales. If you were an artist though would you rather have people buy 1 of your songs or buy an entire album of your work? So which one is more important?

There is more to a successful era than album or single sales. Which one had more awards? Which one will be more remembered? Which did more for the artist? WW certifications speaking, they are very near each other.
Singles go to Katy, albums go to Gaga. The tour is the tiebreaker, and it looks like the Asian leg alone of the BTW Ball alone could very well outgross the entire California Dreams tour. I have to give it to BTW.
Katy's single success this era has been astounding. Whereas GaGa has the upper hand on album sales and touring. I think the reason why Katy's seems to have more impact and success is because Teenage Dream was released after a moderately successful album. It furthered her career and put her in the top tier of the pop girls. Born This Way on the other hand was released off the heels of a blockbuster era. No matter how well GaGa did, the only way was down after the success of The Fame. That's why it feels like Katy is more relevant this era, when really that isn't the case.
Well if TD wasnt more sucessful than BTW, its sucess was somehow more apparent. All those #1s, videos, breaking MJ's record, the most week in Top 10 records were more hyped. All I remember from the BTW are the first week sales.
