Even with the big radio debut, fun. still had a pretty massive radio advantage (104M audience to 40M for "Boyfriend"). And that's even before you get into the streaming advantage. Yes, streaming did give fun. the ultimate advantage, but Bieber really wasn't leading by THAT much before the streaming was kicked into the equation.
My point still stands: If "Boyfriend" had been released under the same formula against any other song that reached #1 this year (other than, maybe, "We Found Love"), it would have been #1. Easily. Bieber just ran into what could be the biggest hit of 2012.
