Where is Gaga going to go, though? Pop has always been where she sees the most success.
Beyonce has Urban, Urban AC and Rhythmic.
Gaga is not really huge on any other formats.

It's kinda weird that MTn flopped since its a up tempo kinda song and I thought it will garner Lotsa AirPlay since the music video is also quite long. I'm not sure whether she be able to. Beyonce just have to release generic songs to get back the popularity interest

I think with the success of TEOG Gaga has opened the door for HAC. Although not as much as other artist like Adele. Gaga should really open up her musical domain to an urban collab hit just to broaden her radio exposure if you know what I mean? I don't think she'll ever go fully urban but a few songs wont hurt.

You mean what Video Phone and Chillin were supposed to be?
Granted, neither we're GOOD attempts at crossing over to Urban, but... Even still, their shallow impact leads me to doubt that she would ever have success with that format.

Promotion from videos is very tricky. Sometimes, a video can really make the difference in the success of a song. There is no doubt that Jennifer Lopez and Shakira both benefitted from their rapidly trending music videos ("On the Floor" and "Waka Waka", respectively). Once you hit a certain point, having a video with a high view count alone draws more attention to an artist and his or her song. But as you said, sometimes a video can have many views and still not be very successful as a single, which is probably extremely frustrating for any record label.
I appreciate Beyoncé's enthusiasm towards creating many music videos for her singles. It's something that I took notice of with her "B'day" album, where she released a music video for nearly every song on the album (or maybe it really was every song).
Yet, the problem with releasing so many videos is that sometimes the quality of the videos starts to deteriorate (Ex: "Kitty Cat" video). I felt that "Run The World" and "Best Thing I Never Had" had very strong videos, but the other videos had a noticeable drop in quality ("Countdown" is fun and creative video, though).
A very wonderful video can propel a song and help it become very successful. When a video is not that impressive (Ex: "Love On Top"), though, it doesn't add much to the success of the song. It might even stunt the potential success of a song.
Though Beyonce continued to release singles from "4", it became apparent which singles were given the highest priority and given the gloss treatment (very nice video) and which singles were rushed. Of course, I am taking into consideration obvious limitations caused by being pregnant (reduced number of performances following the initial single), and I'm not holding that against her.
|
Well Beyonce usually pays for her music videos with her own money, so I doubt she's going to be dropping bucks to make sure they all get big budget videos

I agree.
But I think Gaga has to continue making music like TEOG to get constant spins on HAC. That is her only major hit and "You and I" achieved some top 10 success there, am I right? Take someone like Katy for example. She has had hit after hit on that format with some stuff you wouldn't think would be played on that format. Katy's a major force there, but Gaga, who is a much bigger force in other areas, has only managed to get a couple of hits. TEOG and Y&I are starts, but these aren't the type of songs Gaga usually records or releases.

Personally I felt that Gaga's pitfall was that she released the singles too soon.

Bey had ONE album that didn't fit the mold of what the radio would play (altho I expect EOT to slay all charts), idk why people acting like Bey has been flopping since DC broke up

Beyonce has quite a few branding ventures that rely upon her name recognition as a selling point. It would be hard for her to maintain the brand without popular music.
Lots of people are saying that 4 era would’ve popped off differently had EOT been released as the lead single. There may be some truth to that if EOT ends up being the highest charting single from 4. Beyonce albums tend to ride or die off the strength of one massive hit single. For DIL it was CIL. For B-Day it was Irreplaceable, and for IASF, it was SL. 4 era didn’t have the one massive hit (unless EOT smashes something fierce). So, in theory, she’s really just one hit away from pop radio’s embrace.

Yeah! ATRLers wouldn't believe Katy had 5 #1 hits on HAC from Teenage Dream alone! Katy is a HAC staple now.
Beyonce: I have my doubts she will ever be big on pop radio again but yeah she doesn't need to prove anything anymore, she had top 10 hits from 1998 to 2010 every year.
Lady Gaga: She used to be a force on Pop but if her only core format stops supporting her, she will go the Cyndi Lauper route and slowly slide into irrelevancy.
Her next lead single needs to be SPECTACULAR because she ended BTW era with a bad taste, don't know how long will her break from radio be (pop is fickle) and there's not even half the hype she left with TFM.

Gurl, that's not like their singles weren't radio friendly.

Hopefully the dance-pop trend is on its way out and Bey will be able to score a hit.

Beyonce is radio friendly, all age generations can commonly appreciate it (by commonly i mean not the odd fan) because her work is mature yet warm and uplifting, e.g 'Love on top' - a timeless classic. some songs of course arent as radio friendly like 'run the world'

Yeah, I feel that if Gaga hasn't successfully crossed over to other formats, she never will.
And if pop keeps boycotting her, then she will struggle. Two inglorious flops from one era, when you only have one major hit... That's pretty significant I think.
For her sake, and for the fact that I consider myself a fan (not a stan), I hope I'm wrong, but she will need to play it safe with this next era. Which, seeing as Gaga will be Gaga, she probably won't play it safe.
She has to have lead into a Loud-type era, leading into it with an On the Floor.
(I swear, my opinion on this changes daily, but the point remains the same. Her career as recording artist is in jeopardy right now. As a touring artist, however, she will always be fine...)

If they get on the floor, maybe. If not, they'll marry the night.
Nicole, you should have also included Taylor Swift - she's another one at stake.

It's not radio-friendly, but it's not necessarily unfriendly. Crank That by Soulja Boy was not radio-friendly at all, and it smashed. Just face it, it will take Beyonce a certain Doctor to bring her back to being a radio monster.
