There's pretty much no reliable source for WW sales (especially when piracy runs rampant in huge population centers like China and West Africa), but Mediatraffic is the closest thing to the most accurate information. Labels generally report shipments, and the media has a habit of exaggerating (see: the claims that Elvis and the Beatles have sold 1bn+/Michael Jackson has sold 750M+ records, for example ).

IFPI is the closest thing to an official source but even they report shipments for albums, not sales.
