I think it's really a cyclic thing amongst generations. Decades ago, Dianna was considered the the "it" black female pop star and a source of idolization for many young female artists. In the 90's and now, Whitney and Janet are considered by many to be that "it" black female artists that really paved the way. And years from now, Beyonce will be considered the blueprint for black female artists to follow.
Although one could argue Beyonce already is the blueprint for many young artists.
