And I want artists to be interested in their own music again. Doing something that reflects them, instead of formulating an album in order to get a hit. It's disappointing really. I don't understand how we've even gotten to this point.

The explanation can be pretty simple, though. During the 60's, rock music was just developing, same as rap and hip-hop (I'm not very into these genres, though, so starting from this point I will be more focused on rock.) People got bored with this peace-and-love, hippie music from the 60's, so they moved to something more powerful; metal and its subgenres were born. Popstars made their biggest impact during the 80's with Madonna, Michael Jackson and others. 90's was almost a perfect equilibrium between all kinds of genres, besides the fact that there were a lot of them. I believe after reaching this peak, it became way harder to come up with something new, explaining the lack of substance on not only pop music, but pretty much all music genres nowadays.
