Like a Prayer], Madonna acted in a Broadway production called
Speed-the-Plow. She was frustrated with her role and the negative reception, so she wrote this song,"Promise to Try" and "Till Death Do Us Part" in a way of letting some feelings go. Here's what she says about the song:

'Oh Father' is like the second half of 'Live to Tell', in a way. It was a combo package—it was about my father and my husband. I was dealing with male authority figures once again. That is a great source of inspiration in my writing.

"Oh Father" was released as the fourth single off
Like a Prayer, and it was Madonna's first single since "Holiday" to miss the Hot 100 Top 10. It was just released in Europe when it appeared on
Something to Remember (1996), and it peaked at #16 in the UK.
Madonna performed it only on the Blond Ambition, in a medley with "Live to Tell".
The video was directed by David Fincher and it depicts Madonna's relationship with her father and how she dealt with her mother's death when she was a kid.
"Oh Father" is an amazing and beautiful ballad, in my opinion, and I gave it an 8.5.
