I think the thing that people are not getting is this:
There are LEGENDS: Beatles, Stones, Elvis, MJ, Madonna, Prince
And there are icons. Celine, Whitney, Mariah, Janet. There's no shade to that - but icons do not have the impact that legends do on a truly WORLDWIDE level.

You asked why Janet wasn't put in the same league as Madonna and MJ. You got an answer. Either accept the answer or argue against it, don't get annoyed with everyone and throw a fit be sued you didn't get the response you wanted. Like I said, accept Janet's considerable success for what it is, don't try and over-inflate it.

A. Shut up.
B. I didn't ask that. I asked why people fail to mention her. I know for a fact that she's in the same league. People just like to down play her impact and success. And that's the gotcha gotcha.

I never really knew much about Janet but ever since I joined ATRL I decided to look up some of her music, and I fell in love. She's amazing and her performances are beyond epic. She really does deserve more credit, I would definitely put her up there with Whitney & Mariah.

Y'all need to brush up on her older material, though. You might recognize some things you've seen recently.

I love that last little bit of shade.
However, while I personally prefer my Janet to be as pop as she can be, I'd definitely say she favors R&B. She favors the genre a lot more than Whitney ever did.

If I wanted to argue with a delusion person I'd go all the way and have a discussion with FreeBitch about why he thinks Gaga is in a higher league than Madonna. Good day

Especially with how he influenced Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

Prove it. Were proving why she isn't, why can't you prove why she is?
Album sales: Less
Record Sales: Less
WW Impact: Less

According to ATRL everyone who's had major success is a legend.

I don't have to. It's pretty evident. And the last time I checked impact/influence doesn't equal album sales.

Different eras. We're talking about those that debuted 79-82.
Of those, again:
Legends: Michael, Madonna, Prince
Icons: Whitney, Mariah, Janet
A little lower: Celine
even lower: Kylie, Gloria Estafan
Hope that clears that up.

I didn't have to prove that she isn't a legend, that is pretty evident to, but at least I showed my case. If you can't, than your opinion is invalid. It doesn't, but those two factors combined are very important, and she already falls short of the real legends. Hence her being an "icon" vs "legend."

Let us not forget Queen, Barbra, The Who, Tina. Even though she lacks the commercial success locally and WW, I would add Rhe Rhe to the list.

In her prime, Whitney was pure pop. Maybe even more than Mariah.

She might've been big but she's mostly known as MJ sister, that kinda overshadowed her.

Right. It's kind of like how Ella Fitzgerald and Joni Mitchell are legends, because they changed music for women ...
... while someone like Cher, who's had more commercial success than both, is an icon.

does it matter what era is which. Mariah Carey is a legend, and so is Whitney Houston. Whitney remade the standard for a vocalist.
Legends that have been claimed Legends by the general public and every award show for YEARS
Madonna
Michael Jackson
Prince
Whitney Houston
Janet Jackson
Mariah Carey
Slash
Al Green
Little Richard
Aretha Franklin
Cher
Tina Turner
Smokey Robinson
Reba Mccentire
Nat King Cole
ETC
It doesn't matter what "ERA" an artist is from. A legend is a legend. The stance these artists. ALL of the artists have made on music is enough to make them legends, the sales is just the perks and fluff. Any1 can be an icon or have something iconic. They are more than that. Like Barney is an icon, do we put Cher on the same level as Barney. He was a big public figure, right? Joni Mitchell changed music for women and Madonna and Janet changed what a female entertainer should be and could be.
the woman has a BILLBOARD in Times Square with the big ass caption "WHAT MAKES A LEGEND MOST?" It's there everyday. It's done.

Mariah Carey is not a legend, again, she is an icon. There is a difference.

I feel like Cher might be a legend. She's had so many lives, has come back from the dead in so many different incarnations. She's like the ultimate cockroach of showibz. That might be enough to secure her a spot on the legend list.
