I think it's that the public isn't here for what Gaga sees as "sledge-hammering" dance beats.
Judas was fast and hard and flopped, MTN has a rather fast and heavy chorus -> flopping, etc.
I don't know if I buy the lyrical side of it because the public does seem to buy into metaphors and take down some pretty harsh lyrics. S&M was a hit, while being extremely in-your-face, but it had a lighter pop beat.
Rolling In the Deep/SFTTR/Edge of Glory are all metaphors as well, like MTN, and took off fine. Again, those songs dont have the hard and quickly moving dance beats Gaga wanted to bring back with this record.
In my opinion (people can disagree), it's the sound that matters the most. Also why I think Scheisse's super fast pace could bite her back, but it is lighter than her previous dance singles.
