Mariah was hugely successful. But Whitney was the mold for singers of her time period. She crossed over to modeling and movies successfully. She was more of a celebrity than Mariah. Mariah has been more musically consistent, but that doesn't equal more impact. I love them both, though.

Even as a fan of Mariah I would probably say Whitney as she came first, and even Mariah was modeled simply to be a "White Whitney" at first by Columbia. But Mariah went on to do her own thing with her own personality so she is in no way a clone of her.
