Why is a #1 single important?

How anticipated is an album if it fails to go gold or platinum in the long run whereas the album at #2 or #3 does? Also why is the fact that an album has reached the peak position in other countries disregarded?

The US is the biggest selling market in the world next to the UK and Japan. So, basically, a US #1 is sort of a big deal as opposed to a UK or Japan #1, even though those are as big. Truthfully, most people are concerned with an album going #1 that they forget the quality of the album and just try to make their artist relevant to other countries eyes, when, in honesty, all artists should strive to make an album that fits their and their fans needs.

I am not downplaying it and no need to get defensive as I just asked a simple question.

I am not in the US and in my country Rihanna has the #1 album and single. If Rihanna didn't have that but was #1 in another country I wouldn't downplay that so just wondering why Americans do so.

Well the US has the bigger market because of population. Imo you really can't compare the markets of a 300mill populous to a 60mill one ala the UK. So lets compare like with like, Europe vs US; The European market is bigger. Rihanna should have the #1 Album in Europe.

Mary J Blige-The Breakthrough...Be Without You was MASSIVE and she scanned 730k
Mary J Blige-My Life 2.0...Mr Wrong doing terribly on URBAN radio but she scanned 140k still

Beyonce-4...Run The World peaked at 29 for 1 week but she scanned 313+k first week in June
Beyonce-IASF...Single Ladies was MASSIVE and she scanned 482k

Rihanna-LOUD...OG was MASSIVE...207k
Rihanna-TTT...WFL is MASSIVE...197k
Rihanna-RR...Russian Roulette underperformed but went Top 10 and she scanned 180k

A legit fanbase makes a huge difference and matters much more in career longevity...Rihanna's sales make her look more and more like a disposable pop act everyday...

And 11 #1 Singles doesnt sound good with NO #1 albums...especially for an American artist...

Also, big first week sales show who is relevant and/or has a large fanbase. The Navy can't very well claim Rihanna is the most popular popstar on the planet when her first week sales are lower than everyone elses.

It's not solely based on populous. It's based on resources, availability, and marketability. If the different companies market her correctly, it won't matter how many people are in the country. So, if Rihanna is not number one, it's not her fault and it's not her fans fault; blame the companies not marketing her right.

Also Rihanna is not an American artist. It seems most Americans don't even realise that she is a foreigner who is doing very well in America. No other foreign solo artist can claim Rihanna's level of American or global success.

The Populous still has a lot to do with it. The UK has the same resources etc as the US but just on a smaller scale as it is a smaller country. In the same vein if a country like China(>1billion pop.) had the same resources, marketability and availability as the US which country do you think would be considered the biggest music market?

It's important to ATRL, other music message boards, and nothing else.

A #1 album is so irrelevant because it's about timing and nothing more. First week album sales have gone as low as only 44,000. In certain weeks, nearly the entire Top 10 can beat that. Peaks as far as albums go are meaningless to me as 99% of the time, the peak is reached within the first week. There's no climbing or build on popularity as it's usually just a steady decline in sales each passing week. With singles, there's obviously 10x more competition, and more people buy singles as opposed to albums. Each artist doesn't have generally only 3-4 other competitors for the week, but instead multiple songs constantly rotating in and out. Watching the rise and success of singles is far more interesting to me.

Because it means that you where the most popular artist/album for one week or however long your album stays at number 1.

People are trying to dismiss #1's, but they proof your the one everyone is bying no matter if you sale 80k or 300k or a million. You can sell millions and still open at #2, but everyone will be talking about the #1 album and the artist!

Because people on ATRL are largely American so they only see their own country's market as important. its also why international artists like shakira and pink are seen as flops on here when in fact they are not at all.
