really 3 questions there w/ different answers
1. does it diminish them as icons? hm maybe... just bcz the US makes up like almost half of all music sales right? so yea in a way yes it does
2. is US#1 kinda like the holy grail? YES
3. Is an artist a flop w/o it? Absolutely not

Yes they are.. quite logically if they have a #1 in the US its because the public is more here for them.. does that make them real icons? no. but yes i suppose they would be more revered in AMERICAN pop culture
