she is obviously throwing a shade at some other pop star best know for her gimmicks, so she says she doesn't want to be known for stuff like that and wants to keep it about music, cos frankly that's what she is most famous for.
She's smart. Look what gimmicks did to Britney's career. It should always be about the music.
Well, I shortened the title- for space reasons. It's "become" instead of "be" in the actual statement. That means she doesn't think she currently is a gimmick, but if the focus is taken off her music and onto her looks she fears that her looks and "what will she wear next?!" will make her become one. Or at least, that's what I read it as.
I mean there is a thread in the lounge predicting her next hair color. I actually like the fact that she's stripped down and is going for a more natural look.

this isn't about me. but if she continues on this path to finding herself has an artist then I can respect that.
I don't think she intentionally changes her look to bring in attention or interest. She just does what she feels like doing at the time. It's just being experimental.
