I picked that because, indeed, Taylor was not around before then. If you want, you can extend the dates back several more years and you will still find that Taylor has the most radio spins and the most album sales, if that's what interests you.
p.s. This is not all about chart sales. A lot of what I wanted to emphasize is how she appears to have the evasive public presence of a Rihanna with the rabid fanbase of a Gaga. It's quite a strange combination that works incredibly well for her.
