And that's the point I was making about making up for not writing your own songs: No one can deny that Whitney and Tina are two of the most talented females vocalists EVER.
The best example I can give is "I Will Always Love You." That song wasn't written by Whitney but everyone remembers the song as hers because she made it her own. That is something Rihanna has struggled with since her inception as a pop star (even "Umbrella" is generally knows as the Mary J. Blige song that never was).
Not really. I'm not one of the Rihanna stans that are hellbent on proving that she is the next Madonna, Tina, Whitney, etc.
I would never deny that Whitney and Tina are amazing performers, and undoubtedly inspired Rihanna in many ways. But my point was that songwriting is meaningless in pop music. Just take a look at some of the hit albums of the 80s. Back then, people didn't frown upon hiring songwriters and producers to do all of the work. Now, everybody seems to expect the artist to do all of it on their own.
Rihanna still has time to find her niche. She's only 6 years into her career. People count her out too early. Some artists don't find their signature sound for several decades into their career. Rihanna's main problem right now is the fact that she doesn't stick to one genre; but it's also one of her most likeable traits. Beyoncé has, for the most part, stuck to R&B throughout her career. Britney has, for the most part, stuck to pop music throughout her career. But Rihanna? She's been all over the place. When she settles on one specific genre, she can make it her own.
Exactly. She still has a long way to go and may be reaching her own level of artistry soon.
The thing is, when does Rihanna ever try to make herself seem like an artist, that wants to be taken seriously, and wants that artistic appeal that many scrutinize her for not having? The one time she ever did, she was at an all-time low in her life and decided to use it as therapy. As of right now she says she's living. And trying to enjoy life. Why can't her music be a reflection of that. The main problem is that people are trying to put her in a box with others such as Beyonce, GaGa, Mariah, Madonna, etc. The chicks on her own path. Everything doesn't have to be so textbook.

Now, I like Britney but this isn't the place to be acting like you're above manufactured artists. This is a pop forum. and report this if you'd like, too. i said nothing but the truth.
FMKDFMKMDF!!! this thread isn't about Britney though, one of several artists who I stan for. Are you going to bring up Michael, Mariah, Kelly Ckarkson, etc. next just to prove a baseless point? but since you brought it up, in terms of being manufactured: Rihanna > Britney. And Britney has written many songs with substance, the same can't be said for Rihanna. Britney has also co-produced, executive produced her DWAD tour, composed music, plays piano and has contributed her piano skills to her music, choreographed, came up with the concept to many of her videos with the most recent being 'Criminal' -- in terms of talent: Britney Spears > Rihanna.
And Britney has nothing to prove at this point considering she's already made her mark and is embedded in pop culture and pop music and became a pop dominance off one song as to where it took Rihanna several to become a household name. Stay on topic next time.
And thats why she will continue to be a success. Because the more articles slander her the more she will conquer. Obviously, the article has a strong opinion and negativity towards her, but hey. Such is life. They can compare to whoever they want to but she will still outsell them and still be on top. Im not amused and bewildered by the usual posters who only pop up when there is a rihanna hate thread to throw in their cheap ass $0.02 and those who have been publicly humiliated and butt hurt about it.
