No one really believed we were getting a reworked dance version of "Criminal."
That would defeat the purpose of releasing the mid-tempo track. That's just
common sense. But "remix" does imply a track being reworked in a more
noticeable capacity, possibly gaining more listeners on radio. If it's so
subtle that it's virtually indistinguishable from the album version,
then it makes sense just to release the album version.

It's too much for a section of the song that was already well produced and quite a bit varied in terms of sound. Less is more in that circumstance.
