I think people are doing two things. Overestimating SLY, and underestimating Y&I. We don't know how things will end up after they both perform.
Adele may give a note-perfect performance, but that doesn't mean Y&I cannot be the performance of the night and steal the show. SLY exploded after the Brits because she stole the show. Gaga could do the same with Y&I.
Either way, it's the VMAs. Y'all know that bleeding to death on stage will always draw more attention than a perfect vocal.
