It needs to outpeak "Chasing Pavements," which peaked @ #21 on the Hot 100. That should be easy with promo about to take off and sales & airplay growing at the same time. But I think people will call her a "one-hit wonder" if it's not at least a top 10 hit, though many people think it will be.
If Adele performs SLY at the VMAs, I don't see how it doesn't go #1.
I kind of have to agree. If she gives an amazing performance, I think the morning-after conversation will be all about her and the song will shoot to #1 on iTunes. But I worry that she'll feel compelled to perform "Rolling in the Deep."

She's performing SLY. Her label said that this performance will "bring some people to tears." RITD is not a tearjerker song. But there are rumors that she is supposed to open up her performance with RITD, then move into SLY.
Even with an amazing perfomance, it won't shoot straight to #1.
Look at Run The World
It can if the show is high profile enough. Having RITD performed by a contestant on AI is what shot it to #1 with a huge lead (though it was already doing very well before that).
The VMAs are high profile enough an award show (at least in the past couple years) for it to happen.
Where would it need to peak to be considered a "hit"?
