Yeah, you're not understanding what I'm saying. No one said it isn't bad. Rihanna has proven that she can sell albums with Loud. But you see, Gaga has had 1 #1 and 3.2 million sales.
I was using Britney as an example.
And fine, look at the album credits:
DJ Snake, DJ White Shadow, Fernando Garibay, Lady Gaga, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, Jeppe Laursen, RedOne, Clinton Sparks
|
Taylor isn't selling 4.5 mil Worldwide and still selling.

8 people? Since you brought up Britney, let's take a look at songs she's composed from her latest 2 albums:
17. "Scary": Spears, Smith, Kasia Livingston
12. "My Baby": Spears, Sigsworth
10. "Mannequin": Spears, Harvey Mason, Jr., Rob Knox, James Fauntleroy II
9. "Mmm Papi": Spears, Henry Walter, Adrien Gough, Peter-John Kerr, Nicole Morier
14. "Rock Me In": Spears, Greg Kurstin, Morier
And just for kicks:
Someday (I Will Understand):
Britney Spears – lead vocals, songwriting, piano

Rated R still sold fairly well. 3 million in sales and her singles from that era weren't too bad. It wasn't a huge era but it was alright in terms of success. Oh, and yes, she had a writing camp for Rated R (most albums do have writing camps), but she co-wrote a lot of Rated R and was heavily involved in its art direction, creative aspect, and its business aspect. And though the tour wasn't successful, it still grossed around 40 million, 30 of which went to Rihanna.

I'm not downing Rihanna's sales. She sells really good. Better than so many other artists out there. It's the fact that she is losing money from not being involved with the writing process.

Even if they didn't go #1 EVERYWHERE else, it's not like it matters. My point is that she has 3 hit singles (all three of them went top 10 in basically ever territory they were released in) and has sold 4.5 million records.

Artists involved in the writing process still lose money, anyway.

btw the million dollars supposedly is split in thirds as this person is saying
a) flying the artist around
rihanna has not flown around once to promote Man Down
I guess that knocks $333,000 dollars off
b) marketing
there hasn't been any marketing put into man down anywhere - not even radio programmer adds
knock another $333,000
c) catering to radio people
i can guarntee you def jam did not invest $333,000 into an urban single's programmers lmaoo
i know programmers and they do get events from all the labels...but noone pays money to play specific songs...that's illegal. and they certaintly don't do it for every song lmao.

I just want to ask and get this clear. How do you know NO artist makes money off of their music? Are you saying someone like Lady Gaga or Shakira isn't making more off of their music than someone like Britney or Rihanna?
And even if they don't. Don't you think it's is better to write your album yourself with your input and vision than paying thousands of dollars for songs you didn't even get involved in???

This question is clearly for me, so don't ask it so passively.

Just because an artist doesn't write their music doesn't mean they have no connection or relation to the song. Sure, having the ability of writing your own music is a nice bonus, but that's really all it is. It may make it a little more personal to the artist, but if someone writes a song for Rihanna and she can relate to it and love its meaning, then I don't think it matters much.

uhhhh, i guess. But isn't it that much more exciting to listen to someone who has written their music? Like, doesn't it make you proud to know that your fav wrote that song.. lol. i dunno, i'm weird.
And wouldn't it be better and more profitable to the artist and the label to have the artist write their own song??

As I said, writing music is a bonus. Not a requirement. Writing music just isn't an ability Rihanna possesses. If it was an issue that she could do it and she just chose not to, then that would be a problem. I'm not good at playing basketball. Rihanna's not good at writing music. Am I going to hold it against her? Hell no.

Rihanna is still raking in the cash because her album is actually selling (going on 5 million plus worldwide), her singles sell amazingly well too and her tour is sold out.

Not surprised. Does no one remember Timbaland's "I get a half a mill for my beats, you get a couple grand" lyric?
I'm assuming the $1 mill is generally for the first singles or the massively promoted songs. The promotion/roll-out of Man Down (and many other artists later singles) are no where near the same as the first few. Actually, Def Jam must've skipped that step all together, cause they ain't been promoting ****.

But she's not the ONLY song writer credited in her songs, besides Born This way (To my knowledge).

The song writing credits are only her, and the producers she works with on all the songs. (i.e. Judas was written by Gaga, & Redone)
Only You & I, is she the sole songwriter credited.
