With peppy, irresistible songs such as “California Gurls,” pop star Katy Perry is the perfect summer diversion – and it doesn’t take long to feel the good vibrations in concert.
The singer seemingly descended from the clouds on Thursday at the UCF Arena, which is the perfect way to deliver songs that are best described as breezy – just like a perfect summer day.
Unlike Taylor Swift, another of the year’s blockbuster female touring attractions, Perry doesn’t burden her material with excessive melodrama. In a well-paced two hours on Thursday, the best moments were whimsical and even silly, riding a combination of catchy melodies and eye-catching effects.
Did someone mention whimsy?
This show was the musical equivalent of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, a home for the singer’s dreamy imagination “covered in sugar and candy and cream.”
Maybe it was a concert, but it was powered by all the elements of an ancient fable:
There was a villain, in the form of a menacing butcher portrayed in black-and-white on the trio of giant video screens encased in clouds behind the stage.
Most of the other stuff was more fun: A walking slot machine, mimes, lasers, bubbles, a flying cloud and a costume change at almost every turn.
There was a new outfit for almost every song. In fact, there were seven costumes changes in “Hot N Cold,” alone, which must be worthy of recognition by the Guinness folks.
Musically, “Hot N Cold” also illustrates the strength of Perry’s music, which is built on repetitive choruses that somehow are maddeningly catchy.
“You’re hot, then you’re cold/ You’re yes, then you’re no/ You’re in, then you’re out/ You’re up, then you’re down.”
Poetry it’s not.
With so many upbeat anthems at her disposal, it seems like a shame for Perry to squander time on the obligatory unplugged set, but she even made that work. In a medley of her favorite cover songs, she knowingly allowed herself to be “caught” not-really-playing the flute. “OK,” she chirped, “so I can’t play the flute. Stop judging me!”
“Pearl,” another understated song, was elevated, literally, by the presence of two female dancers carried aloft to perform acrobatic moves while dangling from a set of thin cables. At another point, Perry donned a sparkling silver guitar to perform “Thinking of You” above a giant pink cloud that carried her to the back of the sold-out arena.
That was another mellow number, but bigger was better on this night.
But the high points of this show were the elaborate production numbers, especially Perry’s consumption of the odd giant brownie from the mimes (never take a brownie from a mime, kids) and the feathered fan dance that accompanied “Peacock.” Both of those songs might have been racier, if not for Perry’s childlike, seemingly helium-laced delivery.
In her hands, the dream might be strange, but it always has a happy ending.
I attended this event with my wife tonight….for my wife. I expected to have to feign delight and wanderlust like I did years ago at the Broadway production of CATS “which I routinely bitch about because we had the best seats of my life, front row center” and at no time did I feel very Jelico. LOL
Tonight I was very delighted to realize almost immediately that I was spellbound with Katy’s show. I’m 49. My first live concert was Fleetwood Mac Rumors 1977 and I’m a concert junkie. I’ve seen everyone from Tom Petty to Perry Como “I’m not kidding.” I’ve seen YES 6 times, We’ve seen Willie Nelson, the Beach Boys, Kansas, Aeorsmith, KISS, Sammy Hagar “who I rank just below CATS and everyone else you can think of except Barry Manilow “a man’s got to draw the line somewhere “,
Tonight was AWESOME! This was a production not a show, not a concert. Was what I saw tonight Tommy, or A night at the Opera? No. But it was perfectly choreographed, personable, inviting and real. I’d go again tomorrow night and I’ll even spring for the Poppa John’s Pizza with garlic crust. Katy Perry has a new fan.
That's right you better buy her album daddy O.

I attended the concert last night. It was awesome. I liked that she interacted with the audience. I had bought the tickets for my daughter’s 17th birthday and she was estatic. She tweeted that it was the best birthday gift I had given her by far and was excited when her tweet appeared on the large screen by the stage. Mind you I gave her a Mac book for her Sweet 16. That goes to show that it’s not how much you pay for a gift but the joy the gift brings. And I was happy to see my daughter’s face light up when Katy Perry walked on the stage. It was priceless. Katy Perry you rock. And I’d go again if she comes back.
awwww

Figures a Taylor Swift fan cannot spell “douche.” Not to mention, if that is indeed the David Maus from the commercials you could not be more of a “doosh.”
The reason the reviewer probably compared it to Taylor Swift is b/c it is “pop” and many tweens and teens love KP. However, KP is much more talented & just edgier. I attended the concert last night with friends and it was phenomenal by anyone’s standards. Couldn’t find any fault with it at all. There was so much energy in the arena & she is an amazing performer (and a much better singer than I anticipated!) We saw all sorts of people there (truthfully many of her lyrics are probably too racy for many tweens/young teens). She’s sooooo much better than Taylor Swift though. NO COMPARISON.

Katy’s show was incredible. I did attend Taylor’s show on Saturday as well. I will say this: they are apples and oranges. I love Katy, but Taylor’s show was stellar. Absolutely stellar. And I’m not saying Katy’s was not, because it was–I just did not buy tickets until 8 hours before the show, as I have had Taylor’s on my shelf for months. Katy’s voice and stamina as well as her overall production value were killer, and nothing can change that–she even played a two hour set!
