Exactly...there are so many people here who refuse to look at it from a marketing, advertising, and public relations stand point. It's genius.

I'm starting to think Amazon is going to be the big winner here moreso than Gaga. Sure, they will be handing Interscope a chunk of money (which isn't really much for them). Everyone who purchased an album is at least partially aware of their cloud service, cheaper music prices and mp3 store. Everyone who was gifted a copy is also aware. In addition, the largest digital sales week in history will likely go to Amazon, stealing the crown from iTunes sales. On top of that, as we can see by all the haters here, there will be a ******* of probably negative publicity towards Gaga saying she doesn't deserve her sales and blah blah. Amazon will be cashing in on all of this exposure as the huge digital sales service that made it all possible.

The level of idiocy in this thread. From both sides.
Amazon is the largest online retailer in the US. They can afford selling albums at a loss. I'm sure they know what they're doing and don't need business pointers from BRITNEY SPEARS FANS. The one area where Amazon lags is music downloads and based on the tremendous response to the $0.99 BTW deal (it's not easy to crash a site like Amazon), it was a smart move. And let's not pretend that albums like Teenage Dream and Animal/Cannibal didn't spend a good 50% of their chart runs on discount everywhere from iTunes to Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart. Even Femme Fatale's price has already been slashed. They weren't selling for $0.99, but their discounts actually came from the labels.
What Amazon did is going to keep happening from now on. And BTW is always going to be cited as the album that instigated the movement. Even though it's been done before, this is the first time the industry will sit up and take notice.
But Gaga fans pretending that the $0.99 discount didn't incentivize tonsof people to buy who wouldn't otherwise have bought are being equally delusional. Just wait until the second-week drop. Not that it matters all that much - most pop albums are lucky to go Platinum in their entire runs even with lots of hit singles and big promo. Sure, Rated R wasn't really helped by its week-long $0.99 Amazon discount, but it also didn't have the kind of BTW hype and buzz that would make non-fans interested in buying it at a bargain.
As for the massive BTW promo, are people really surprised? Of course Interscope is going to put their full weight behind this album. They didn't have to hire expensive writers for it - for better or worse, Lady Gaga wrote it and you can tell. They didn't hire expensive producers with diva demands for it - for better or worse, Garibay & Whiteshadow have had no prior hits. The whole album was recorded on the road while Gaga was making Interscope money not just from a $200M+ tour, but also from selling millions of singles, albums, Halloween costumes, merchandise, endorsements, etc. Just to put things in perspective: while BTW was being recorded, her tacky Remix album easily outsold Cannibal WW. Last week, TheWrap did a breakdown of Gaga's contribution to Insterscope - since 2008, she has made over $200M for them. It's not surprising that they're supporting her like this. The perks of not being a basic pop star.

This complaint has to be the funniest to me. Why is it a bad thing that people who weren't sure if they were going to buy it or not now have an incentive to buy it because of an attractive price.

They? Is Amazon trying to break Britney's record? Interscope nor Lady Gaga is involved in this.

We need Apple to stan harder.
The Edge of Glory in every iPad commercial? She'd hit 8x platinum in no time.

Great post Nicole - I agree. Let's not forget that Jimmy Lovine is playing all of his cards to promote Gaga because Interscope is slowly losing market share to Columbia.

I'm hoping he has some big things planned for longevity. I'm sure he wants a certain someone's wig as badly as I do.

Well, the tour is beginning in November. It's a great way to promote the album.
