BORN THIS WAY ALBUM COVER:
To me, the first thing that comes to mind is Telephone. One of the many messages of Telephone was that in society today, we are becoming increasingly dependent on technology. The “Born This Way” cover reflects this because Gaga has become so dependent on technology that she has literally become a part of it; in this case, as a motorcycle.
Similarly, it has been noted that Gaga loves metal music, and that songs on Born This Way are pop with some metal/ electronic influences. Thus, metal is becoming a part of Gaga’s sound/ image, and that is reflected in the cover.
One of the many images Gaga has utilized since the beginning of this era is a “biker chick” image- the denim Born This Way jacket, the variety of leather outfits, the wild hair with a wind-blown look- becoming part of the motorcycle is just a different approach to being that biker chick.
“Get your hot rods ready to rumble, cause we’re gonna fall in love tonight. Get your hot rods ready to rumble, cause we’re gonna drink until we die.” This set of lyrics tweeted by Gaga immediately before the album cover was released, from a song believed to be called “Unicorn Highway (Road To Love)”, again suggest that Gaga is going for a biker chick image with some songs on this album and with this cover.
Gaga is a vehicle, a tool used for transportation. In this case, Gaga is transporting us to the future; a world where people and technology have blended, and a world where there is full equality and people will no longer be judged for being who they are.
This cover also reflects the old saying, “don’t judge a book by it’s cover,” or in this case, “don’t judge an album by it’s cover.” The music on the album, regardless of your opinion of the cover, will blow you away.
It fits with Gaga’s typical black and white photos, and before the release of Gagavision 42, Gaga tweeted about red lipstick- notice that the only color in the image is Gaga’s red lipstick.
It’s daring and it’s shocking; two of the things we love most about Gaga. Gaga is a shock performance artist, and this is a part of that. If it were something that we’d expected, it wouldn’t be Gaga.
“Born This Way” is the name of the album, and many people expected a picture of Gaga as she was born. However, Gaga has stated throughout the Born This Way era, most notably when referring to Rico the Zombie, that birth is more than just the instant we come into this world; birth is about finding who you are inside, and bringing that to the outside. Just as Rico did by tattooing himself as a skeleton, Gaga has created an image of herself as a motorcycle- they were born that way; not literally, but because they have become the people that they wanted to be, regardless of the opinions and judgments of others.
