The first 2/3 of the movie do such a great job of exploiting your fear of the known, of what you don't see. Using sounds and objects moving. There's a scene where Rose Byrne sees a child-like apparition run into her son's room. She goes in and notices her son's wooden horse rocking...but part of the horse is hidden by an open door. So you can't tell if someone - or something - is riding it. It's so scary and well-done.
The last third goes too far - you see way too much. Too many ghosts and demons. After a few minutes you get desensitized to it. I wish they'd held back on showing and explaining so much. I don't need to understand everything about the supernatural - not understanding is what makes it scary.
Still a great ride though. Love Rose Byrne. Damages
