Christina held a teleconference, promoting 'The Voice' this morning
Quote:
One might expect that a Christina Aguilera teleconference with the print media could get a little messy right now. Over the past year, there was the flop album, the divorce, the National Anthem mishap at the Super Bowl, the public intoxication arrest...
But Wexford's own Aguilera, in promoting her role as a coach in the NBC show "The Voice" (premiering April 26), was nothing but graceful and articulate in touching upon some of those issues. She even joked with the reporter asking about the Super Bowl, saying "what hiccup?" before laughing and going on to say that she will use it as a teachable moment in the show.
She talked about a tweet she wrote supporting Britney Spears' new album release, saying that given the state of the music business right now, artists have to support each other especially when they're old friends.
At one point, someone asked her opinion of Rebecca Black, to which she said, ""I'm sorry. I live under a rock ... I have no idea who Rebecca Black is."
I figured it was my duty to think locally, so I asked her what she remembers about her vocal coaching/mentoring while growing up in the Pittsburgh area and how she may have used it later.
She was less than flattering about her musical upbringing here:
Oh, that’s a loaded question for me. I hate to say it and I don’t want to come across negative, but I really didn’t have a lot of support. There were people who did support but it was extreeemely few and far between.
Where I grew up, it’s a very sports-driven town, which, if you’re there, you know. The town I came from was very sports-driven and there wasn’t a whole lot of support for the arts, in my experience. It wasn’t until I went to, I think, the Mickey Mouse Club where I was first able to, I felt, breathe as a kid who loved performing and singing ... and dance. You got to do all those things with these amazing, talented people which needless to say are now some of the biggest, brightest stars of today [including Britney and Justin Timberlake]. So it was amazing to be on that show and connect with, simply, a school for super-talented kids. I felt lucky in retrospect to be a part of such an amazing and creative talented energy, but at the time we were just a bunch of kids having fun and it was the first time that I was really with other kids who I felt were like me and shared the same passion for performing that I did at such a young age.
That was my first real experience with it, but growing up in Pittsburgh, I think that really gave me... I would start maybe around 6 or 7 performing at local block parties, pool parties, then graduated into doing weddings and things like that, then graduated into doing the National anthem, performing for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and Penguins.
So, [laughs] that was basically where I got my starting point, but I didn’t get ... maybe grandma honestly was probably my biggest support and mentor. Other than that I didn’t have any vocal or formal training. That’s actually what scared me a little going into this. Like, I’m not a vocal coach. I sing and I do what I do, but it just comes out of me. I don’t have any formal training, but I guess you get into it and you realize, I’ve been doing this for so many years, I know exactly what to say and do...
Don’t expect Christina Aguilera to shy away from questions about her public pitfalls or alleged rivalry between Britney Spears, as she sets the record straight on her “old friend” — and growing from her mistakes.
In a press call this morning, Christina elaborated on her recent shout out to Brit, in which she tweeted support for Femme Fetale:
“At this point in the game, I think it’s important to show support … especially for female artists.”
She went on to say the two are “old friends” going way back to their Mickey Mouse Club days.
Christina also had kind words for Jennifer Hudson recently, tweeting:
“How incredible does @IAMJHUD look and have you checked out her album? Yes GIRL!”
When asked about her own ups and downs (such as her detainment for public intoxication), she expressed how her positive outlook will help contestants on her new show, The Voice, by saying that everybody can learn from their mistakes — and pass that knowledge on to others.
It seems fitting then, that she’s one of four judge slash mentors on NBC’s upcoming singing contest. Not only are the judges on hand to pick new talent, they they’re also tasked with personally guiding them through the process. She is teamed with Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Cee-Lo Green — who, it was revealed today — will all also perform a number together on the show.
Christina also explained how The Voice differs from American Idol and other televised singing contests by revealing that they do not actually see the contestants the first time they sing. The selection process is based solely on their singing voice. Only after the judges have heard them perform do they decide if their talent is worthy of moving on in a blind vote.
While promoting her new NBC show The Voice with producer Mark Burnett, judge Christina Aguilera took time out to say nice things about fellow pop star and old friend Britney Spears.

When asked about sending Britney a congratulatory tweet about her her new CD, Christina said, “You know what I haven’t heard the whole thing in it’s entirety (Femme Fatale). I’ve been really hard at work on this show. I haven’t had quite the chance to go through the whole thing.”
“But I am a huge supporter of her in light of the fact that both of our careers started off together and are still going and going strong,” she explained. “I just think at this point in the game it’s extremely important to be supportive of fellow artists and especially females who get pitted against each other and torn apart. As an old friend of mine from the Mickey Mouse Club, I think it’s important at this stage in the game to show my support.”

Other female artists that Christina talked about liking were Jennifer Hudson, Florence Welch and Adele!
“Jennifer Hudson has a beautiful voice. I truly enjoy working with her and we became friends. She’s such a cool, down to earth person. She definitely has some pipes and it’s effortless to hit those notes. It’s a beautiful thing to watch. Florence, Florence & The Machine, she has quite a striking and interesting voice. And Adele, I think she has a really cool something that is going on right now. So those would be the 3.”
"She's the toughest one of us all," he confesses of the sole female on the panel, Ms. Aguilera. "She's very stern very serious and very professional about her job. We're a bunch of goofy guys, otherwise. Just kinda messing around and cracking jokes and pranks and stuff like that."
I love watching Law & Order even more now, so many Voice ads. Even voice over's "Christina Aguilera is looking for The Voice April 286h" at the end of the episode.
