There have been many, many huge albums; but albums that become EVENTS? Not so sure about that.

That may be too stringent a standard, because there's never going to be a pop star as big as Michael/Madonna again. There are just too many decentralized entertainment options these days, it's harder to have a monopoly to the extent they did.
I think in terms of a music star garnering media attention (which is a good indication of being a "cultural event" -- I do agree there are artists who can sell big numbers while still being relatively under the radar) Gaga is the biggest since Britney, who WAS an event 99-01.
