That's true. But she was coming off a not so good digital era. So she's building back up and S&M will outperform OG if analysis is done.
OG sold 249k first week then fell to 160k i believe. Not to mention OG had to split WMN (urban release) sales for most of its run. S&M has so far been selling 170k+ consistently for several weeks now. And is not looking to slow down.

And to the others who are saying rihanna had promo in the UK. Didnt you say that people will choose to buy the song after the promo week is complete? Rihanna sold 130k for 2 weeks straight.
S&M is performing superbly for a 3rd single. She's ahead GAGA in 8 countries and counting. Hopefully Germany and US will be soon as it will be released in Germany in a week or so , and she's also nominated for an Echo award.
OH YEAH.....
According to the world chart, Mediatraffic, the following artists are having the most success with singles in 2011...so far. As of March 4th. Not to mention 700-800k points she's garned for the last 2 weeks. There's absolutely no argument. Rihanna being #1 will not change for a LONG TIME. Her songs are smashing simulatneously, a feat that very few can accomplish. Sorry Are you ready for S&M , CKB, Cheers and the new single to continue this trend? Because i am. Thankkkkks.

Do you know how many songs Rihanna had on chart this year? And she had 3 months, while Gaga had only 1 month, and only 1 song...
So, if I follow your perspective, by calculating BTW downloads (1 song) times 5 (quantity of Rihanna songs) times 3 (months Rihanna had that Gaga didn't), it would be WAY more than just 8,164,000 downloads (actually, 23,205,000)
And all that according to Mediatraffic

Did you carefully read my post? Where did I undermine Gaga's success? I was responding to people who were undermining Rihanna's. That is all.
I said Rihanna is having great WW success bud.
And just to respond to your logic: Mariah carey is the biggest selling female artist of all time and she's released 15+ albums, while whitney houston has released i believe 7-8 studio albums. But It doesnt take away mariah's title.

Well, I hear that BTW's performance so far has been rather underwhelming (i.e., not as good as expected), so maybe we should start with that standard for RihRih. She can do better than underwhelming, surely.

Oh of course in the US , she's not performing as well as I believe she could. I personally believe that it has to do with the CB incident. CB and Rihanna have both been weakened digitally in the US since then, mostly because the stans that once supported each others music, hate each other and the artist.
However, things are beginning to turn around as both are returning back to normal...Rihanna is more on a faster pace.....that's just my hypothesis.

In terms of money gained by the artist, 1 single sold my Rihanna is not equal to 1 single sold by Lady Gaga or Beyonce. In terns of monetary gain, these numbers are not as comparable as you think. For example, Lady Gaga is the singer, songwriter, and producer (last two shared with other people) of BTW and Rihanna -as far as I know- is only the singer of OG and they get different royalties from each single sold. Given the fact that these people are in this business for money, why should we insist on comparing them on units sold? Just because statistics are more accessible and available is not a valid answer. A better question is, why insist on comparing them all the time...
More importantly, this whole thread and charts in general are overrated by some of the posters here. Charting high and selling more singles are undeniably important things, but just because one artist charts higher or sells more singles does not mean that artist is more "successful" than the other. According to Billboard, Carrie Underwood earned $13.5 million in 2010, more than the sum of what Rihanna and Katy Perry -the chart monsters- has earned in the same year. Daughtry earned more than both of them! The obsession with sales numbers in this thread is of course understandable, but let's not go overboard...
