She wasn't supposed to have a career by now. Last time I checked that song has been in the top ten since its release. What a flop!

"If I Was Your Girlfriend" is my favorite Prince song, but it takes more than musical excellence to be called a part of the trinity. Obviously he's on another level from Madonna and MJ, musically. But he's not as iconic as they are and he's certainly not very relevant for today's young people, as they are.
|
I agree. But I do think he's almost as influential as they are. Just listen to some of today's very famous pop and R&B singers. Most of them pay homage to him through their music. That's probably why he gets lumped with MJ and Madge from time to time.

Subjective, subjective, subjective, and I honestly believe there's no one else out there currently who sounds worse.
Even if I give that last point to you though, it hardly helps. Impact wise, Britney>>>

Britney was important for pop culture until 2003... she had a moment when she was HUGE and her music was relevant...
but since, she has been losing fans and followers and she's selling nothing compared to Britney, Oops... and Baby one more time.
She alredy peaked!
I mean i doubt she will ever will have a Grammy nomination... or a 4 platinum album again...
That's the difference between Britney and Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Rihanna... they're just starting and they're going higher ... gaining new fans and new audience and they're not just being in the business because of her names...
Britney and Madonna and Prince aren't musically relevant anymore, but their names still selling... and that's why Britney's new song was #1 for a while.... but it couldn't keep that spot because she's not gaining new fans with her song... it's just for her stans...
Today radio belongs to Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Rihanna (and of course many others).... and everybody talks about those girls... Britney is a legend, but her music that matters is the one she made in the past.

The original poster who coined the term in reference to pop stars already explained it:
The "Holy/Untouchable" Trinity: MJ, Madonna, Prince
The Vocal Trinity: Whitney, Mariah, Celine
Today's Trinity: Britney, Beyoncé, Gaga
See? Janet is nowhere to be found. Take a hint from Eli (or me with Kylie) and just STOP.
|
Prince? he's semi-legendary but he is no part of any trinity I'm not here for ********.
it's just MICHAEL & MADONNA.
and don't put Janet & Kylie in the same level (altought I love me some Kylie) JUST NO
There's no such thing as trinities.
In the 90's I would say QUINTET = Mariah, Madonna, Whitney, Janet, Celine. They were the real forces of the 90's and all of them are talented.

Prince isn't semi-legendary. He's legendary. He may not be as known to today's kids as MJ or Madonna, but he definitely deserves his title as "legend."

I totally agree. He's hugely influential within the industry. It's a special case though. Like Stevie Wonder.

As Ace said, I explained this already.
The ORIGINAL Trinity - MJ, Madonna, Prince (and you WILL deal).
The Trinity (current) - Beyonce, Britney, Lady Gaga.
Janet & Mariah dominated the nineties, but they did so practically alone - hence you COULD call them a Dynamic Duo.
That is it.

I don't see Prince as legendary, he's more of an icon which is not the same but I hope you get the idea.
We're talking about the US? the World? I just don't see Prince as legendary. his music is fantastic tho.

Um, if you consider Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and even my girl Janet Jackson, "legendary," you would have to consider Prince a "legend."
And what's "legendary" about Celine or Mariah besides their over-the-top singing and record sales? Their music is middling.

Prince sold out 23 dates at the 02 a couple of years back. If that's not legendary, I don't know what is.

Prince is not iconic. He's legendary. People don't know his imagery very much anymore, aside from being purple and sexual. But they know he's a genius.

To each his own. but this thread isn't about Prince, Ace Reject's post just caught my attention because he mentioned Ms. Jackson.

BLASPHEMY!
I ADORE their voices and I'm sure millions of people do. What you said is very subjective... "their music is middling" HELL NAW Their catalogs are full of masterpieces.

And whoever said Mariah's catalogue is 'middling' - BITE. YOUR. TONGUE.
Hero, Always Be My Baby, Vision Of Love, We Belong Together, Butterfly amongst numerous other classics, 'middling'?
For. Shame.
