The metaphor comment is really important. In literature in general, gay and lesbian themes are almost always expressed with metaphors - it is hardly ever stated directly and bluntly. So while the lyrics are generic, cheesy, and not that great, it's absolutely true that she went against the norm and took a risk. You have to give her kudos for that.

We all know that she supports it, and whether or not people agree with it should not be a problem for her. The worst for me was when she related Alejandro to gay lovers.

I wanted to add that my two cents because most people don't understand that gay and lesbian themes are almost always hidden beneath metaphors in any type of literature. As someone who studies English and Literature, this has been addressed more than once in certain courses that I have taken, so much that one of my peers chose it as a topic of research.
