1) It's not hard to find a dorm if you start in the spring. There are empty spots everywhere, it's kind of a mess at most colleges haha.
2) I wouldn't say it's hard to make friends with other students, it's just that all the students already know each other so well. If you don't have a problem with that then you're fine.
