And GaGa was far from being generic when Just Dance was released. I loved her 70's look, with the Bowie/JOnes influences. She was so unique, but it didn't seem like she was trying too hard. It was like that's who she really was.
I'm glad she took a risk and changed her sound/image so quickly, while she was still on top. Usually artists do the same over and over again and only change things up out of desperation when they start flopping.
