I agree - only very few artists have managed to exceed the Singles sales they achieved early on in their careers. It'll be interesting to see which direction Gaga goes in and how it's going to be perceived over a long-term period.
I also agree in that #1s are not to be underestimated, they are what is ingrained in people's minds.
