Yes, Mary J. Blige but the problem is her international establishment. She didn't have an impressive catalog overseas to supplement her US foundation. And in effect, this is also an unfair scale with home-based artists who gets tons of recognitions as opposed to the others who thrive internationally (though local records aren't shabby at all). Example: P!nk.
|
That wouldn't make much difference. Her respect is huge here in the US. She has performed next to some of the most respected legends and vets in the game: Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Elton John, George Michael, U2/Bono, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Wonder, etc. Her album, My Life, ranked on Rolling Stone's 500 Definitive Albums of All-Time and many other "best of" lists, and she was even placed on their Greatest Singers of All-Time list. She is one of the few artists with a "legit" honorific title. Her longevity in the game is just as impressive as Mariah's and her acclaim eclipses Mariah's, too. As long as respected artists in the industry have respect for her, her overseas success and acclaim will not matter on these types of lists. She is very much a possibility.

But, let's talk about ratio - the old list was like 90 -10 in terms of males to females
I think this one will be 70 - 30. So which women will make it? Some are definites (Aretha, Madonna, Tina, Janis) and one was mentioned in the press release (Queen Bee) - who else?
|
Alicia Keys
TLC
Mariah
Whitney
Mary J.
Celine Dion
Shania Twain
maybe Alanis, maybe Norah Jones

If it's truly a critical list, then I want my lovelies Depeche Mode to chart too.
Who else would probably be a shoo-in?
Radiohead (as mentioned)
Carole King (you wouldn't have most female artists without this bitch)
The Velvet Underground
Although guys, I think the list will probably be a bit more modern than you think.

Sonic Youth is eligible for R&R Hall of Fame consideration - and actually made the long list last year. janet's eligible for R&R Hall of Fame consideration, and nobody's see her ass yet. HMM?
Eli, I love you but don't do me!
(And if you come for The Pixies again - well, I'll do things no mod should do.)
|
I think R&R is biased against her because of the super bowl. Real talk
I'm going to laugh at you when she makes the list and any one of these don't. Now that MJ has died they're going to put her on, as silly as that may be. I'm not saying she wouldn't have before, but then I am, because they would have probably passed over her due to this past decade of mediocrity.
On top of all of that, you think Amy Winehouse and Alicia Keys have more of a chance of making this list than Janet Jackson. You know that's wrong.

It was obviously 'N Sync that made him a star.

And tell me what is JT doing now and what is Usher doing now? Usher is still making music and if JT is getting more exposure its because he is getting more exposure as a celebrity not a musician thats for sure

I doubt Amy Winehouse and Alicia Keys have a better chance than Janet. Amy may be viewed as a "flash-in-the-pan" and Alicia, while respected, hasn't gotten much acclaim since her first album. I think Janet's biggest obstacle is/was the whole Superbowl issue; if the voters looked passed that, she's in for sure.

Rock bands of the last thirty years?
Definities:
Radiohead
U2
Nirvana
Possibles?:
The Pixies (without them, no Nirvana)
R.E.M. (they are in the Hall of Fame, after all)
The Cure/The Smiths
Sonic Youth
The White Stripes
Pearl Jam (Dkw, but whatever)
Hole (because ... well, you know)
The Arcade Fire (if they're feeling hip)
Who else am I missing?

I don't deny that Justin is taking a long and stupid break, but everything he touches seems to turn to gold and he has a certain bankability that Usher lacks. If it weren't for OMG, Usher would not have done very well this era. Justin will not have an uncertain album era, at least not for a long time.
Neither of them have done anything impressive musically, but JT gets much more critical praise. You'd have to be slightly crazed not to see it. No matter how dormant he is, he has left a more permanent mark than Usher. And I don't even like him, at all.

Ace Reject: Oasis, but that would have been applicable had it been 1999 too.
Oh, The Smiths too... New Order & Joy Division too, but this list might unforunately be too mainstream!

There was also Love In This Club remember Usher is one of the few artists to have a #1 single in 3 different decades has JT done that? I can tell you everything that Usher has done what is that gonna do to resolve this the question here has what has JT actually done to leave more of a permanent mark than Usher? Really I mean what has he done besides become big just because of his boy band? Usher took his relationship with Chili and exposed it to the whole world with 8701 and Confessions what has JT done that is really dramatic and monumental?

That's the best selection. And unfortunately, I can seem them making the lower 90s. GROSS
Okay, hip-hop next:
Jay-Z
Biggie
Tupac
Outkast
Beastie Boys
Are like the five strongest contenders. But you can't forget Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, NWA, Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Kanye.
If there would be a female hip-hop artist, I can't see how it could be anyone other than Lauryn - Miseducation looms THAT LARGE.

Here is one question you need to ask yourself who is more likely to make the list R. Kelly or Usher? There you go

They were the first name I thought of - but they started in the 70s, no? Out of all the punk/post-punk bands, they're the surest bet.
