Discussion: Your thoughts on the "Ground Zero Mosque"

I am really the only one who can sympathize with 9/11 families. All I can say is I'm a proud American and I am standing up for the people who have suffered and lost so many loved ones. I don't know how all of you feel, but I just want Ground Zero to be a memorial and place of peace. If this is built, it is pretty obvious that there will be even more tension.

I think Muslims should be able to pray wherever. But people in this country are still ignorant about 9/11 and everyone knows that. Him approving it is him acting oblivious. But idiots who protest aren't right either. Why couldn't the Masjid be built anywhere else?

So, wait. You think that people who are protesting are idiots who are ignorant of the true situation, but Obama still should have opposed the building because ignorant idiots won't like it? Are you SERIOUS?
What's the alternative? Where does that reasoning lead? Obama protests the funerals of soldiers, because if he supported them, the Westboro Baptist Church would be offended? Obama refuses to hire any black cabinet members, because the KKK is going to be against it? Obama refuses to hire any white cabinet members, because it's disrespectful to the descendants of slaves? Give me a break.

How do you think we got to end Jim Crow Laws and get Women's Rights, we had to make a point through some kind of tangible medium. This mosque is the medium these muslims need to make a point about muslims not taking the blame for 9/11, that other people who just happened to be muslim should take the blame

Buddy, that's textbook fearmongering.
Ground Zero IS going to be a place of peace and memorial. This mosque is NOT being built on Ground Zero.
Do you live in New York? Near it? Ever been? Do you realize just how far two blocks is in the city? It's not within sight of Ground Zero. Sarah Palin calling the mosque "steps away" is just stupid; it's as much "steps away" from Ground Zero as it is from Times Square. A lot of steps, but you can step there if you really want to.
Point being. Ground Zero will be a memorial. For a two block radius around the site, there will be no sign of Muslim presence. Why isn't that enough?

I empathize with the 9/11 victims and families too, I just can't though at the fact that the muslims are the ones being blamed for something that has nothing to do with them ONLY that they are muslims. I too, am a proud American. And I too want Ground Zero to be a memorial place, but that doesn't mean 200 meters away has to be a memorial place as well when that certainly isn't Ground Zero. Yes tension will be built, but that would bring American closer to liberation and freedom from Muslims being victimized only because they are Muslims

I know what your point is, but Americans aren't ready for that. It'll just cause more tension. They're close minded and aren't gonna put up with it. It's gonna cause LOTSSSSSSSSSSSSS of tension. My parents are Muslims, i know how people react to them.

Have YOU ever been to NYC? I live half an hour away and I am there often. The proposed obviously is very close to Ground Zero. The building which was a Burlington Coat Factory was actually destroyed on 9/11. Isn't THAT enough?

I really wish you wouldn't be so closed to everyone else's opinions and would try to see it from another point of view. Clearly we sympathise with people's families, just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they don't so don't insult us all. I understand where you're coming from but I think you're wrong. Imagine you were just a normal Muslim who lived in the area and had the sort of abuse that you've put on this threat and how that would make you feel. Basically you're telling them it's all their fault, that they're all the same and that terrorist and Muslim are interchangeable.

You're right, but if not now, then when. Capitalize on a good opportunity while you can, because you may regret it and may never get the chance ever again

If I were a Muslim in charge of this I would simply move the location. Americans don't want any problems and aren't hating all Muslims. It would not be difficult for them to move, so why can't they just do it?

If one American or 95,000 people who liked that page are American, then suddenly ALL americans are like that. It happens with almost all of the international ATRL members. Not just you

=/ that's true. but there's gonna be tension either way. so i guess it'll have to be dealt with. read the comments on the fb page though. they say the rudest things. i think this might start something really big and ugly.

But I did read those FB pages comments, and they are VERY RUDE and OFFENSIVE. What is wrong with some Americans today? It's like they are just so bigheaded and don't want to listen

To be honest, it's the internet. I take everything with a pinch of salt because people say things online that they wouldn't dare in real life. I've met nice Americans, clearly they exist but I find some of the views posted on forums absolutely outrageous
